Why did I fail my Writing Challenges?

Over the past five years I have been actively trying to be a writer. I have set goals but for some reason I did not achieve them. For some reason you would expect me to have learnt my lesson but I didn’t.

When I wrote the newsletter two weeks ago I decided to work on these projects.

  • 100 days of Poetry
  • 100 days of Short Story
  • 100 days of Spoken word Poetry
  • 90 days YouTube Challenge.

But two days in and I could not keep track of the many things I was working on.

When this happened I felt bad because I had already promised to do these challenges .

But I sat down and asked now that I have failed to do these challenges. What’s my takeaway?

Here are three I would like to share.

  1. Set Realistic Goals

In the past I would set these goals that were not true to myself. Setting realistic goals doesn’t mean you should not be ambitious.

It simply means that whatever I decide to do I should have the time to do it. When I set these goals I forgot that there was a reason I failed at these goals in the past.

  1. Make a choice for now

The choice is not forever. When I set

goals and I get to the point I need to shortlist the goals and delete the not so important goals for now .

I am like if I can’t get everything, give me nothing.

Here’s my biggest realization.

You can do everything but only one thing at a time.

Looking back, if I had worked on one or two goals I would have made so much progress with those writing goals.

Progress no matter how slow is always better than nothing.

I used the Warren Buffett rule for setting goals. I took all the things I want to do with writing and I crossed them off until I am left with one thing for now.

  • Write fifty word stories everyday until 100 pieces
  • 30 days YouTube Posting Challenge

I will work on the other goals but not now.

  1. Learn from your Failure(s)

For me I have understood that I don’t do well when overwhelmed. And instead of quitting completely I made a choice. A choice of the goals to work on. Knowing fully well that this is a choice for now.

At the end of the year these lessons from the failures will help me save my time in upcoming years.

Eventually a day will come when I will look back and break down all the goals I wanted to work on and the results I got from doing them.

The biggest lesson is to focus on a few goals .

I know how hard it is to choose from all the goals. Nothing is not an option for me.

Until next time keep writing
